The 2025 Lexus GX 550 is here
It’s not your ordinary GX now. This time, there are significant upgrades. Now, all the GX 550s come with a turbocharged V6 powertrain. Being a full-time 4×4 SUV, it brings in advanced off-road features.
Despite its 4×4 specialty, it does offer a 3rd row seating capacity (limited to a few trims only). All in all, the GX 550 brings in something for everyone.
In this guide, we will take an in-depth look at the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail. So, let us get into it!

Lexus GX 550 Overtrail Review – Who Is it for?
From the specs sheet to its actual drive, I can say this with confidence. The all new Lexus GX 550 is for someone who wants a luxurious full time SUV with all the modern 4×4 add-ons. Thankfully, Lexus has really proved that. The last generation of GX was no less capable at all. However, now it’s better, more powerful, and aggressive.

Lexus GX 550 Overtrail – How’s the Interior?
As always, Lexus hasn’t disappointed us even here. The white interior gives a very refreshing look. It actually gives you the impression that you are getting into a modern 4×4 with all the tech one could expect.
And that was exactly what I felt. There are very few differences between the top of the line Overtrail+ vs the Overtrail trim. Starting off from the driver’s side, you get 8-way powered seats as well as power-adjustable and heated steering wheel. I really like how the GX’s steering feels. It’s compact, has a rugged look and all the controls a driver could ask for.
The digital instrument cluster shows all the essential information, including speed, RPM, driving mode, temperature and other essential gauges.
In the center you get an upgraded LCD that has an integrated dual zone automatic climate control system. The two round-shaped dials help both driver and passenger set the temperature of their choice. I loved these round dials, so convenient and practical. The front heated and ventilated seats are also controlled through the center LCD.
The overall seat design and leather stitching also give a premium touch to its interior. Moving on to the second row, you get ample leg and headroom. Rear AC vents and USB-C ports are available for rear passenger convenience.
Being an off-road centric variant (Both and OT, and OT+) doesn’t have a functional 3rd row. So, there’s no 3rd row seating option available in the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail.
All in all, there’s a lot of space for carrying out cargo. Last but not the least, you get a built-in air compressor at the back for off-roading convenience.

Lexus GX 550 Overtrail Review – Towing Capacity
In terms of towing capacity, the GX 550 Overtrail is like its other trims. You get a little over 9000 lbs of towing capacity, which is again very impressive for its class. You get the standard tow prep wiring with the cooling equipment.
To get the most out of your GX 550 OT in terms of towing, you can opt for an optional tow hitch receiver and ball mount kit.
However, you do get a front towing hitch and a front skid plate, which adds to overall rigidity of the SUV. This means you can easily tow almost all kinds of routine stuff. The towing capacity on Gx 550 won’t disappoint you in any case. But some towing extras (optional on Overtrail) can make a difference.

Lexus GX 550 Overtrail Review – Off-Road Performance
Now comes the amazing part of the review. As mentioned, the Overtrail and Overtrail+ are off-road tuned versions. I tested the Overtrail, but Overtrail+ off-road performance won’t be much different since they both share same set of 4×4 add-ons.
Starting off from a rough off-road patch, I tested how the GX 550 drives on a rough terrain. For this, I selected the sports+ drive mode for the optimum off-road drive. As expected, the vehicle was quick, felt in control alongside the sharp turns and the V6 powertrain really showed its potential.
Next, I drove it on a rocky surface to really test its E-KDSS (Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System).
I have to say, it really does its job well. It automatically adjusts the suspension’s response based on the type of terrain you ride on. For me, it’s not just a marketing gimmick, Lexus has definitely done their homework to really make the GX 550 Overtrail an off-road king for its class.
So, the off-road performance here is excellent for its class. It’s 10/10 from my side.

Lexus GX 550 Overtrail Review – City Driving Experience
I found GX 550 Overtrail to be an equally suitable SUV for city roads. The ride is smooth, there is minimal to no cabin noise, and the throttle response is also excellent. Despite its bulky shape, you can steer it with ease on even some of the busiest roads. At least, that’s what I experienced.
The 0-60 times are quite impressive for its class. All it takes is a little over 6 seconds (6.5 to be exact) to reach 60 Mph.
Again, I’m impressed by that V6 powertrain (note that it’s not a hybrid powertrain). Moving forward, the driver assisted features, especially the Lexus Safety System 3.0 package (more on it later) gives you that extra peace of mind while driving in city.
If you ask me, I liked its raw power. The under the hood V6 powertrain keep you entertained all the time. With just a slight push, you can overtake any vehicle next to you. In short, the swift response and adaptive suspension helps a lot in city driving.
Lexus GX 550 Overtrail Cargo Space
As I mentioned earlier, these off-road oriented rims (OT and OT+) have 5 seats configuration to offer. So, as a result, you get plenty of cargo space. It can easily accommodate 3 large suit case. On top of it, you can add some lightweight luggage. You can also fold down the second row seats for added cargo space. Here is a quick chart for GX 550’s cargo space reference.
Configuration | Cargo Volume (cu ft) |
---|---|
Behind 2nd row (seats up) – Overtrail | 45.6 |
Second row folded – Overtrail | 90.5 |
Third row models – seats up | 10.3 |
All seats down – other trims | 76.9 |
Let’s not forget the power tailgate that really comes in handy. Further, the rear glass panel is also functional, perfect for accessing small items from the trunk.
Lexus GX 550 Overtrail Review – Safety Features
Lexus never compromises on the safety side of things, no matter the series number. And the same is the case here, you get Lexus Safety System 3.0 as standard across all variants. So, the GX 550 Overtrail also has it.
As I stated earlier, it really gives the driver an extra peace of mind, no matter which terrain you are on. Here are a few safety add-ons you get with GX 550 Overtrail.
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
- All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
- Lane Tracing Assist (LTA)
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
- Road Sign Assist and Proactive Driving Assist
Lexus GX 550 Overtrail – Pros and Cons
Short on time? No worries, here are the quick pros and cons based on my actual testing of GX 550 Overtrail.
Pros of the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail
- Powerful V6 engine – The 3.4L twin-turbo V6 felt amazing to drive. It’s quick, responsive, and pushes the GX to 60 mph in just over 6 seconds.
- Outstanding off-road capability – I tested it on rough and rocky terrain, and the E-KDSS system really proved its worth. It automatically adjusted the suspension and made the drive stable and controlled. For me, it’s a true off-road king.
- Smooth city drive – Despite being a big SUV, it steers easily, rides smoothly, and keeps the cabin quiet. The throttle response makes overtaking effortless.
- Premium interior feel – I loved the white interior, stitched leather, and the modern 14-inch touchscreen. The round climate control dials were simple yet practical, and the seats were both comfortable and luxurious.
- Spacious cargo area – With no third row, the Overtrail gives you plenty of space: 45.6 cu ft behind the second row, and over 90 cu ft when folded. The power tailgate and functional rear glass panel make loading even easier.
- Impressive safety package – Lexus Safety System 3.0 really gave me peace of mind. Features like pre-collision assist, adaptive cruise, and lane tracing assist work seamlessly in all driving conditions.
Cons of the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail
- No third-row seating – Since the Overtrail is off-road focused, it only comes with two rows. Great for cargo, but not ideal if you need space for more than five passengers.
- Optional towing extras – The towing capacity is excellent (over 9,000 lbs), but to get the most out of it, you’ll need to add some extras like the hitch receiver and ball mount kit.
- Not a hybrid – The raw V6 power is fun, but fuel consumption can feel heavy, especially in city driving, where it averages around 15.3 L/100 km.
- More off-road than family-oriented – It’s built for adventure and capability, which is perfect for me, but anyone wanting hybrid efficiency or extra seating might find it a bit limiting.

Lexus GX 550 Overtrail Review – Ending Thoughts!
Time to conclude the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail review. Overall, the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail impressed me. Some manufacturers introduce a purpose-made trim (off-road, for example), but very few really stand behind their claim. Lexus has really proved this time that they know how to make a luxurious full-time 4×4 SUV.
GX 550 Overtrail ticks almost all boxes for me. Apart from the fuel economy (which is common for its class), there is hardly anything to hate about this vehicle.
Flex Automotive Inc. has a wide range of GX 550 stock (including Overtrail) available in its inventory. You can also customize your GX 550 Overtrail the way you want.
