Lexus GX 460 Best Years, Years to Avoid & Used Buying Guide (2026 Edition)

GX Articles

  • Twitter
  • Facebook

The Lexus GX 460 is one of the easiest used luxury SUVs to recommend. For fourteen model years, 2010 through 2023, Lexus sold essentially the same body-on-frame, V8-powered, full-time 4WD truck, built in Japan on the same bones as the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150. That long, slow run is good news for used buyers: the formula was proven early, and most of the known weak points are well documented.

It also means the differences between model years are subtle. A 2011 and a 2019 share the same 301-horsepower 4.6-liter V8 and six-speed automatic, but they differ in safety equipment, infotainment, recalls and the problems owners report. This guide sorts all of that out so you can pick the right year for your budget.

We buy and sell Lexus GX models here in San Diego, and we have handled nearly a dozen GX 460s ranging from early 2011 trucks to 2018 models. Below is what the data, the recall records and the owner community say about the best years, the years to approach with caution, and what to check before you buy.

Quick Summary: Lexus GX 460 Model Years at a Glance

Every GX 460 uses the same 4.6-liter 1UR-FE V8, six-speed automatic and full-time four-wheel drive. What changes from year to year is the safety and infotainment equipment, the recalls on file and the problems owners have reported:

Short version: the best years are 2020 through 2023, with 2022 and 2023 at the top for the new touchscreen. The best value sits in 2014 through 2019. The year to approach with the most caution is 2010, followed by 2011 to 2013 unless the secondary air injection system has already been addressed.

Is the Lexus GX 460 Reliable?

By most measures, yes. The GX 460 pairs the 1UR-FE 4.6-liter V8 with a conventional six-speed automatic, a two-speed transfer case and a Torsen center differential, and it rides on a steel ladder frame. There is no turbocharger, no hybrid system and no air suspension on the standard trims. That simplicity shows up in the numbers:

  • iSeeCars rates the GX 460 at an average lifespan of about 203,500 miles, with a 52.9 percent chance of reaching 200,000 miles, and ranks it second among 28 luxury midsize SUVs for reliability (as of November 2026).
  • In the September 2026 iSeeCars longest-lasting vehicles study, the Lexus GX ranked seventh overall, with a 23.3 percent chance of reaching 250,000 miles, more than four times the average vehicle.
  • RepairPal gives the GX 460 a 3.5 out of 5 reliability rating, fifth of 14 luxury midsize SUVs, with an average annual repair cost of $770 against $807 for the segment. GX 460 owners visit the shop slightly more often than average (0.8 unscheduled visits a year), but only 9 percent of those repairs are severe, below the 11 percent segment average.
  • NHTSA has logged fewer than 40 owner complaints for even the worst model year (2010), and single digits for every year from 2018 onward.

That does not make the GX 460 maintenance-free. It is a heavy, V8-powered truck with a 23-gallon tank and an EPA rating of 15 mpg city, and the common problems below are real. But as used luxury SUVs go, the GX 460’s reputation for going the distance is earned.

How Many Miles Can a GX 460 Last?

Owner reports on ClubLexus and ih8mud regularly describe GX 460s at 150,000 to 250,000 miles on the original engine and transmission, and the iSeeCars data above suggests roughly half of them will pass 200,000 miles. Two factors matter more than the odometer: whether the cooling-system and oil-leak items described later were addressed, and whether the truck lived in the salt belt. A 140,000-mile California or Texas truck with service records is often a better buy than an 80,000-mile truck from a rust-prone state with none.

GX 460 vs. Land Cruiser Prado 150: The Same Truck Underneath

The GX 460 is the North American version of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150, built alongside it at Toyota’s Tahara plant in Japan. The two share the 2,790 mm (109.8-inch) wheelbase, the frame and the basic suspension layout, including the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) that is standard on every GX 460. The GX is longer than the Japanese-market Prado, is left-hand drive only, seats seven as standard, and uses the 4.6-liter V8 that Toyota never offered in the Prado.

That is why the GX 460 is such a good “JDM Land Cruiser alternative” for US buyers: you get Prado durability with a Lexus dealer network and no import paperwork. If you are comparing the GX 460 with its predecessor, our Prado 120 vs. 150 article also compares the GX 470 with the GX 460.

Lexus GX 460 Generations and Facelifts: 2010–2013, 2014–2019, 2020–2023

Lexus has built three generations of GX. The first-generation GX 470 (2003–2009) used the 4.7-liter 2UZ-FE V8 and the Prado 120 platform. The second-generation GX 460 (2010–2023) is the truck in this guide. The third-generation GX, usually called the GX 550, arrived for the 2024 model year with a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V6, a 10-speed automatic and an all-new platform shared with the LX 600.

Within the GX 460’s run, there are three distinct phases that you can spot from across a parking lot:

  • 2010–2013: the original front end with a conventional grille, halogen headlamps (HID optional) and a small 4.2-inch backup-camera display. Trims were GX 460 and GX 460 Premium.
  • 2014–2019: the first refresh brought the Lexus spindle grille, standard LED headlamps and daytime running lights, an 8-inch Display Audio touchscreen and the GX 460 Luxury grade with air suspension. Lexus also cut the base price by $4,710 for 2014.
  • 2020–2023: the second refresh added a revised spindle grille, standard triple-beam LED headlamps and, more importantly, the Lexus Safety System+ suite as standard on every trim. For 2022 the dash gained a 10.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Output never changed. Every GX 460 from 2010 to 2023 is rated at 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque, with a six-speed automatic, full-time 4WD and a 6,500-pound towing capacity.

Lexus GX 460 Model Years: Year-by-Year Breakdown

The counts below are owner complaints filed with NHTSA for each model year, as of November 2026. They are raw numbers, not adjusted for how many trucks were sold, so treat them as a rough guide to which years generated the most noise.

2010 Lexus GX 460: The First Year and the Stability Control Recall

The second-generation GX 460 reached dealers in late December 2009 with the new 4.6-liter V8 (38 horsepower more than the GX 470), a six-speed automatic, standard KDSS, 10 airbags, a standard backup camera and optional Crawl Control, radar cruise control and Mark Levinson audio. It launched at $51,970.

Four months later, Consumer Reports gave the 2010 GX 460 a “Don’t Buy: Safety Risk” rating after its emergency-handling test, in which the rear of the truck slid out when the driver lifted off the throttle mid-corner. Lexus halted sales the same day, and on April 19, 2010, Toyota announced a recall of about 9,400 trucks to reprogram the Vehicle Stability Control software (NHTSA campaign 10V-159). Consumer Reports retested the updated truck and lifted the label on May 7, 2010.

What to check: Any 2010 GX 460 you look at today should have had that update done years ago, but it is worth confirming by VIN. The 2010 model also carries the highest NHTSA complaint count of the run (38), including early reports of a soft brake pedal, and it falls inside the secondary air injection program described later.

2011–2013 Lexus GX 460: Early Years, Same Formula

Changes in these years were small: Smart Stop brake-override became standard for 2011, premium audio became standard for 2012, and 2013 was a carryover year. The lineup remained GX 460 and GX 460 Premium, the latter with rear air suspension with height control, Adaptive Variable Suspension and heated rear seats (navigation was a stand-alone option on both).

What to check: 2010 through 2013 trucks are the ones covered by Lexus Warranty Enhancement Program ZLH for the secondary air injection system, which affected roughly 48,000 vehicles. NHTSA complaints dropped from 36 for 2011 to 11 for 2012 and 7 for 2013, and these years are among the cheapest ways into a GX 460.

2014 Lexus GX 460: The Spindle Grille Refresh

The 2014 refresh is the biggest visual change in the GX 460’s life. Lexus fitted the spindle grille, standard LED headlamps and DRLs, an 8-inch touchscreen Display Audio with backup monitor, HD Radio and Bluetooth audio, Trailer Sway Control, and a newly available Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. The trim structure became GX 460 (with an optional Premium Package) and GX 460 Luxury, which bundled the air suspension, navigation and parking sensors. The base price dropped to $49,085.

What to check: Two cautions. First, 2014 and 2015 trucks are included in the 2020 Denso low-pressure fuel pump recall (NHTSA 20V-012), which can cause the engine to stall. Second, CarComplaints.com rates 2014 as the GX 460’s worst model year, largely on the cost of the coolant valley plate leak reported by owners. NHTSA complaints for 2014 (21) are the highest of any post-2011 year.

2015–2016 Lexus GX 460: Minor Updates, Luxury Trim Matures

These are quiet carryover years. Lexus added Siri Eyes Free for 2015 and Enform Remote smartphone control and Service Connect for 2016. Both years keep the 2014 styling and the 15/20/17 mpg EPA rating.

What to check: The 2015 shares the fuel pump recall with 2014; 2016 does not. NHTSA complaints were 11 and 9 respectively, and CarComplaints notes that 2016 drew its highest number of user complaints, mostly about brake pedal vibration and cooling-system leaks, though the total was only four.

2017–2019 Lexus GX 460: Sport Design, Captain’s Chairs and Enform

For 2017 Lexus added the Sport Design Package (unique bumpers, exhaust tip, gray 18-inch wheels), offered second-row captain’s chairs for the first time, included Enform Safety Connect on all trims, and formalized the Base, Premium and Luxury lineup. The Driver Support Package on the Luxury brought Pre-Collision System, radar cruise control and Lane Departure Alert, but these were still optional. The EPA highway rating fell to 18 mpg for 2017 after the EPA updated its label calculation methods for 2017 models.

The 2018 model was a carryover, with semi-aniline leather standard on the Luxury. For 2019 Lexus made Enform Safety Connect and Service Connect complimentary for 10 years, added Amazon Alexa and smartwatch integration to Enform Remote, and offered the Blind Spot Monitor at no charge.

What to check: The 2018 and 2019 trucks are covered by the second fuel pump recall (NHTSA 20V-682), and 2017 is the last year included in the Takata passenger airbag inflator recalls. NHTSA complaints for 2017, 2018 and 2019 were 15, 9 and 8.

2020 Lexus GX 460: The Second Refresh and the Off-Road Package

The 2020 model is the first GX 460 with Lexus Safety System+ standard on every trim: Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert, Intelligent High Beams and High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. It also brought a revised spindle grille, standard triple-beam LED headlamps, a customizable touchscreen home screen with 3D maps, two extra rear USB ports and a larger driver-information display.

The new Off-Road Package, available only on the Luxury grade, added a Multi-Terrain Monitor, Panoramic View Monitor, transmission cooler, fuel tank protector, Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select. If you plan to use a GX 460 off pavement, a 2020 or later Luxury with this package is the one to find. NHTSA shows no recalls and only five complaints for the 2020 model year.

2021–2023 Lexus GX 460: CarPlay, Black Line Editions and the Final Years

For 2021 Lexus added a Premium Plus package (navigation, power third row, Mark Levinson audio), acoustic front side glass on all trims and Alexa compatibility. The big change came for 2022: a 10.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Alexa standard on all trims, plus newly standard navigation, parking sensors and power-folding mirrors. The 2022 model also introduced the GX Black Line Special Edition, with black 18-inch wheels, blacked-out trim, red taillamps and the exclusive Nori Green Pearl paint.

The 2023 model was the last GX 460. The Black Line returned, capped at 3,000 units, and the Luxury grade gained standard Mark Levinson audio. Lexus revealed the all-new 2024 GX in June 2023, and production of the GX 460 ended that November. NHTSA lists zero recalls for 2021, 2022 and 2023, and complaints of 4, 7 and 6.

Best Years for the Lexus GX 460

2020–2023: The Most Complete GX 460

Why it stands out:

  • Standard Lexus Safety System+, triple-beam LED lighting and the Off-Road Package option on the Luxury.
  • The lowest complaint counts of the run and no NHTSA recalls at all.
  • The 2022 and 2023 models add the 10.3-inch CarPlay screen, which is one of the most common complaints about older GX 460s, solved at the factory.

Watch out for: price. These trucks average from the high $30,000s to the low $50,000s in late-2026 listings. Among the 2020–2023 group, our pick for most buyers is a 2022 Premium. It has the new screen and standard navigation without the Luxury’s air suspension, which is one more system to maintain as the truck ages.

2014–2019: Best Value With the Refresh

Why it stands out:

  • The modern spindle-grille look, LED lighting and the 8-inch Display Audio for roughly half the price of a 2022.
  • The longest track record of any GX 460 group.
  • A 2017 to 2019 with the Driver Support Package gets you most of the 2020 safety hardware, and a 2017 or later Luxury can be found with the Sport Design Package and captain’s chairs.

Watch out for: Confirm by VIN that the fuel pump recall (2014–2015 and 2018–2019) and the Takata airbag recalls (through 2017) were completed, and budget for the cooling-system items in the problems section if the truck is over 80,000 miles.

Lexus GX 460 Years to Avoid (or Approach With Caution)

No GX 460 model year is a bad truck. But three groups deserve extra scrutiny, and in each case the fix is paperwork: proof that the known issue was already addressed.

2010: First-Year Issues and the Most Complaints

The 2010 model combines the VSC recall, the highest NHTSA complaint count of any year, early reports of soft brake pedals and harsh 2-1 downshifts (addressed by a software bulletin), and membership in the secondary air injection program. None of these is catastrophic, and a 2010 with the updates done and the air injection pump already replaced can be a bargain. Without records, we would pay less or keep looking.

2011–2013: Secondary Air Injection and Early Electronics

These trucks are mechanically identical to the 2010 without the stability-control history, so the main question is whether the secondary air injection system has failed yet. Lexus’s ZLH program extended coverage to 10 years or 150,000 miles from the date of first use, which means it has now expired by age for every 2010 to 2013 truck. Ask for the repair invoice, or price in a repair that owners report at roughly $2,000 to $2,500 at a dealer.

2014: The Refresh Year Needs a Careful Inspection

The 2014 model is on both lists. It is the start of the best-value group, but it also carries the fuel pump recall, the highest post-2011 complaint count and CarComplaints.com’s “worst year” rating, driven by owner reports of the coolant valley plate leak. A 2014 with the recall completed and a dry engine valley is as good as a 2015 or 2016; one without is a negotiation.

🚨 BEFORE YOU BUY: Check Open Recalls by VIN

Every GX 460 recall is a free repair at a Lexus dealer, but a used truck may never have had the work done. The ones that matter:

  • 10V-159 (2010): Vehicle Stability Control software update following the Consumer Reports rollover-risk test.
  • 20V-012 (2014–2015) and 20V-682 (2018–2019): Denso low-pressure fuel pump that can fail and stall the engine. Replacement pumps have been available since 2020 and early 2021.
  • Takata passenger airbag inflators (2010–2017): Several campaigns, phased in by the state where the truck is registered.
  • 2020–2023: No recalls on file as of November 2026.

What to do: Enter the 17-digit VIN at the NHTSA recall lookup before you buy. A Lexus dealer can also tell you whether the ZLH air injection program was ever applied to that VIN.

Common Lexus GX 460 Problems to Check (All Years)

The items below are the issues owners most frequently report on ClubLexus, ih8mud and the Lexus GX subreddit, cross-checked against Lexus technical bulletins and NHTSA records. Repair costs are owner-reported or estimator figures and vary by region.

Secondary Air Injection System Failure

This is the signature early-GX 460 problem. Moisture gets into the air injection pumps and air switching valves, triggering the check engine light with codes such as P2440, P2441, P2442 or P2445. Some owners report the truck dropping into limp mode with the 4LO and SLIP lights flashing. Lexus issued Warranty Enhancement Program ZLH in February 2017 covering certain 2010–2013 GX 460s, about 48,000 trucks, for 10 years or 150,000 miles from first use, and that coverage has now lapsed by date. Owners report dealer repairs in the $2,000 to $2,500 range. Reports on 2014 and later trucks are rare.

Coolant Valley Plate Leak

The 1UR-FE V8 has a coolant crossover plate in the valley between the cylinder heads, and some owners report its seals leaking, typically between about 65,000 and 120,000 miles. Symptoms include a slow coolant loss with no visible drip, a sweet smell and, eventually, low coolant warnings. Because the intake manifold must come off (and some dealers quote the job with the engine out), reported repair quotes range from about $1,600 at a dealer for the plate and gaskets to the $4,800 average CarComplaints.com lists for 2014 trucks. Most owner examples are 2010 to 2015 models; whether later engines are immune is unclear.

Water Pump, Radiator and Other Coolant Leaks

Water pump seepage from the weep hole is reported from under 40,000 miles into the 100,000s, often fixed under the powertrain warranty on newer trucks. One owner’s 2020 dealer quote came to about $125 for the pump plus $688 in labor. Plastic radiator end tanks are reported cracking past about 80,000 to 110,000 miles. None of these has a Lexus bulletin; they are ordinary wear items that happen to show up early on some trucks.

Timing Cover and Valve Cover Oil Leaks

The most common oil leak on the 1UR-FE is at the timing chain cover where it meets the block and head. It is a labor-heavy repair because the front of the engine has to be stripped: owners report independent-shop quotes near $1,000 and dealer quotes from about $2,000 to $3,600. Smaller leaks from the cam towers, valve cover gaskets and spark plug tube seals are also reported, with the tube seals reported at about $700 per side at a Lexus dealer, or around $1,000 for both sides at a Toyota dealer. Look for oil wetness at the front of the engine and down the sides of the block during an inspection.

KDSS Lean and Hydraulic Leaks

Every GX 460 has KDSS, the hydraulic stabilizer-bar system that lets the suspension articulate off-road while staying flat on the street. Two things are reported. The first is “KDSS lean,” where the truck sits visibly lower on one side, usually the passenger side. Lexus has a bulletin (L-SB-0015-21) covering all 2010–2023 GX 460s that replaces the front-left coil spring when the lean exceeds 20 mm, though only within the 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty. The second is hydraulic fluid weeping from the KDSS actuators or lines, which owners say to check at every oil change.

Brake Actuator Reports

A handful of owners of early, high-mileage trucks report the brake actuator motor failing, sometimes with a deep pedal and no warning lights. We mention it because the repair is expensive on other Lexus models that use similar hardware, but we found no GX 460-specific bulletin or recall, and NHTSA brake complaints for the whole GX 460 run number in the low teens. Treat it as something to listen for (a buzzing pump motor at key-on) rather than an expected failure.

Fuel Pump Recalls (2014–2015 and 2018–2019)

Two NHTSA recalls cover the Denso low-pressure fuel pump, which can fail and stall the engine: 20V-012 for 2014–2015 GX 460s and 20V-682 for 2018–2019. Trucks from 2016, 2017 and 2020 onward are not included. Parts have been available since 2020 and 2021, so the fix should be done; confirm at nhtsa.gov/recalls by VIN. Separately, 2010 through 2017 trucks are included in the Takata passenger airbag inflator recalls, depending on the state where the truck is registered.

Infotainment Aging and the CarPlay Question

GX 460s built before 2022 do not have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The 2014–2021 trucks use the 8-inch Display Audio and an Enform app system that feels dated next to any current vehicle, and 2010–2013 trucks have the older 4.2-inch or navigation screens. Aftermarket CarPlay modules exist for both eras and kits from GROM, Hamilton and Beatsonic run about $540 to $750 before installation, but that is money to factor in if a modern phone interface matters to you.

Dashboard of a 2018 Lexus GX 460 with the 8-inch Display Audio screen

Frame Rust in the Salt Belt

The GX 460 is not covered by the frame-corrosion programs Toyota ran for some older trucks, and dealers treat rust as a non-warranty condition. About half the respondents in a ClubLexus poll reported some rust underneath. Trucks from the Southwest, including the California and Texas examples we usually see, are generally clean; a Northeast or Midwest truck deserves a look at the frame rails, crossmembers and radiator core support.

Used Lexus GX 460 Buying Checklist

Here is the list we work through on every GX 460 that comes through our lot:

  • 1. Run the VIN at NHTSA. Confirm the fuel pump recall (2014–2015, 2018–2019), the Takata recalls (2010–2017) and, on a 2010, the VSC update.
  • 2. Ask for the secondary air injection repair invoice on any 2010–2013 truck. If there is none, scan for stored P244x codes and budget for the pump and valves.
  • 3. Check the cooling system cold: coolant level, pink residue around the water pump weep hole, radiator end tanks and the engine valley under the intake. Then check the heater output on a test drive.
  • 4. Look for oil at the timing cover, along the block below the cam towers and in the spark plug tubes.
  • 5. Park the truck on level ground and sight down the rear bumper. A truck that sits noticeably low on one side may need the KDSS spring bulletin or a KDSS service.
  • 6. Cycle the transfer case into 4LO and back, lock the center differential and listen for the brake actuator pump at key-on.
  • 7. On a Luxury or 2010–2013 Premium, raise and lower the rear air suspension and confirm it holds height overnight.
  • 8. Confirm the third row powers up and down and that the side-hinged tailgate and its glass open and latch cleanly.
  • 9. Check the Lexus Enform screen for a working backup camera and, on 2022–2023 trucks, a working CarPlay connection.
  • 10. Pull a vehicle history report and confirm where the truck lived. A Southwest truck with records is the ideal GX 460.

How Much Does a Used Lexus GX 460 Cost in 2026?

Used GX 460 prices track model year closely, because the trucks changed so little and buyers pay for the newer safety and infotainment hardware. The figures below are nationwide average asking prices on Cars.com as of early November 2026; actual prices vary with mileage, trim, condition and region.

Model YearsNationwide Average Asking Price (as of November 2026)Typical Listings
2010–2013about $16,000 to $18,200from about $9,000 for high-mileage trucks
2014–2016about $21,400 to $24,400from about $13,500
2017–2019about $27,300 to $32,500from about $15,600
2020–2021about $37,400 to $41,000from about $22,500
2022–2023about $47,800 to $53,500from about $35,000

Average asking prices are from Cars.com national listings by model year as of November 2026 and will change with the market.

For context, a 2023 GX 460 started at $58,875 and a 2023 Luxury at $69,530 (Cars.com MSRP data), so even the newest trucks have shed a meaningful share of their original price while the oldest have settled near $16,000. Well-sorted early trucks with documented repairs and tasteful modifications (all-terrain tires, aftermarket wheels, a roof rack) routinely command more than the averages, and that is true of the GX 460s we list as well. FLEX prices are shown before tax and transport, and each listing page calculates the total for your location; see our Lexus GX inventory for current examples.

Choose the GX 470 if you want the lowest entry price and a timing-belt V8 you do not mind servicing. Our GX 470 best years guide covers it in detail.

Choose the GX 460 if you want the most proven combination of V8 torque, three rows and full-time 4WD for the money.

Choose the GX 550 if you need the extra towing and the latest technology and can absorb new-car depreciation. Its early reliability record is covered in our GX 550 engine problems guide.

Choose the 4Runner if you prefer a simpler interior and a lower price and can live with the V6 and part-time 4WD on most trims. The 4Runner and GX 460 share a platform, so they drive more alike than their badges suggest; see our GX 550 vs. 4Runner comparison for the current generation and our LX vs. GX guide if you are weighing the full-size Lexus.

How We Evaluated Lexus GX 460 Model Years

We ranked the model years using four inputs:

  • NHTSA recall and complaint records for each model year, 2010 through 2023, as of November 2026.
  • Owner complaint data from CarComplaints.com, including per-year counts and average repair costs.
  • Lexus pressroom releases and technical bulletins for the equipment changes, the ZLH air injection program and the KDSS lean bulletin, and EPA fuel economy data.
  • Owner reports from ClubLexus, ih8mud and the Lexus GX subreddit, used for symptom descriptions and repair cost ranges, never as the sole source for a defect claim.

We weighted documented programs such as the ZLH air injection extension and the fuel pump recalls more heavily than isolated owner complaints. We also drew on the GX 460s we have bought, inspected and sold ourselves, though we have not conducted long-term testing of our own.

Final Thoughts

Quick recap:

  • Best years: 2020–2023, ideally a 2022 or 2023 for the CarPlay screen; 2014–2019 for value.
  • Approach with caution: 2010 (first year, VSC recall, most complaints), 2011–2013 without an air injection repair invoice, and 2014 without the fuel pump recall done.
  • Any year is a good buy if the recalls are closed, the cooling system is dry, the oil leaks are addressed and the frame is rust-free.

The Lexus GX 460’s biggest strength is consistency. Fourteen years of the same engine, transmission and frame mean there are no bad generations to avoid, only early trucks that need their known issues addressed and later trucks that cost more. If a 2010 to 2013 truck comes with records showing the air injection system was repaired, it may be the smartest buy of all.

FAQs

What is the best year for the Lexus GX 460?

The 2022 and 2023 model years are the most complete: standard Lexus Safety System+, the 10.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and no NHTSA recalls. For value, 2014 to 2019 trucks offer most of the same hardware at a lower price.

What Lexus GX 460 years should I avoid?

Approach the 2010 model with the most caution because of its first-year stability-control recall, highest complaint count and secondary air injection issues. The 2011 to 2013 trucks share the air injection problem, and 2014 draws the most reports of coolant valley plate leaks. All are fine with documented repairs.

Is the Lexus GX 460 a Land Cruiser Prado?

Yes. The GX 460 is the North American version of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150, built in the same Japanese plant with the same frame and wheelbase, but with a 4.6-liter V8 and Lexus equipment.

How many miles can a Lexus GX 460 last?

iSeeCars estimates an average lifespan of about 203,500 miles for the GX 460 and a 52.9 percent chance of reaching 200,000 miles. Owner reports of 250,000-mile trucks on the original engine are common.

Does the GX 460 have a timing belt or chain?

The 1UR-FE 4.6-liter V8 uses timing chains, and the Lexus maintenance schedule has no replacement interval for them. The GX 470’s 4.7-liter V8 used a timing belt.

What is the GX 460 towing capacity and MPG?

Every GX 460 is rated to tow 6,500 pounds. EPA ratings are 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway (17 combined) for 2010 through 2016, 15 city and 18 highway (16 combined) for 2017 through 2019, and 15 city and 19 highway (16 combined) for 2020 through 2023.

Should I buy a GX 460 or wait for a used GX 550?

A used GX 460 costs far less and has a proven track record. The GX 550 adds power, towing and technology but, as of November 2026, used 2024 examples still average about $77,500 on Cars.com, with the cheapest listings in the mid-$60,000s. If you want the GX 550’s twin-turbo V6, our GX 550 engine problems article covers what owners have reported so far.
