The fuel efficiency of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150

The fuel consumption of the Land Cruiser Prado 150

The Land Cruiser Prado has been sold since 1990 as a derivative of previous Land Cruisers, and the current 150 series Prado has been on sale since September 12, 2017. When you think of the appeal of the Land Cruiser Prado, you think of its exceptional driving performance for all terrains and roads.

It is equipped with a powerful engine that matches the vehicle’s capabilities, and the engine lineup includes a 2.8L diesel engine and a 2.7L gasoline engine. However, in today’s world where economy cars are popular, there are probably many people who are concerned about their fuel efficiency.

Therefore, for this article, I would like to focus on the fuel efficiency of the Land Cruiser 150 Prado. We will also introduce the fuel efficiency and the characteristics of each engine, so please read the article to the end.

Differences in fuel efficiency because of different engines in the Land Cruiser Prado

Land Cruiser Prado 150

Equipped with two types of the latest engines that achieve high fuel efficiency

One of the reasons why the Land Cruiser Prado is highly rated around the world is the outstanding driving performance that allows it to take on extreme driving conditions off-road. The Land Cruiser Prado is built on a ladder frame and uses a strong suspension, but it also has a certain amount of weight, so naturally, the engine must be powerful. In addition, environmental performance and fuel efficiency cannot be ignored, so the two engines installed in the Land Cruiser Prado are equipped with Toyota’s latest technology.

Power, quietness, environmental performance, and fuel efficiency are key factors in the engine build. The two newest engines capable of these factors are:

Inline 4 2.8L 1GD-FTV diesel engine

The inline 4 2.8L 1GD-FTV diesel engine used in the current Land Cruiser 150 Prado uses a common rail fuel injection system and a turbocharger with a water-cooled intercooler. In addition to demonstrating superior power performance with a maximum output of 204ps/201 HP and a maximum torque of 51kgf.m/389 lb.-ft., it also achieves excellent environmental performance through the adoption of the latest clean technology such as an exhaust gas purification device and urea SCR system.

In addition, it has superb fuel efficiency compared to gasoline engines, and because it uses light oil as fuel, it is also popular due to lower maintenance costs than gas-powered engines. However, the adoption of the urea SCR system necessitates regular replenishment of AdBlue, so it cannot run just by refueling like a normal passenger car. If you think it’s a pain to refill AdBlue, you may want to choose a gasoline car.

Straight 4 2.7L 2TR-FE gasoline engine

The in-line 4 2.7L 2TR-FEV gasoline engine used in the current Land Cruiser 150 Prado is an established gasoline engine with a good balance of power, operability, and quietness. It not only has lightweight acceleration performance on-road but also powerful off-road driving. In addition, it is superior in quietness compared to a diesel engine, which lessens interior noise making it more of a luxury car. There is no need to replenish AdBlue like a diesel engine.

The adoption of Dual VVT-i, which is Toyota’s valve timing mechanism, and the low fuel injection due to the high compression ratio, achieves fuel efficiency performance that is unthinkable from the old cross-country SUV. It takes regular gasoline that is easy on your wallet.

Driving performance of the remodeled Land Cruiser Prado

Equipped with Multi-Terrain Select for extremely rough road performance

Compared to other countries, Japan is a country with very good road conditions. In Japan, I think that it is rare for the Land Cruiser Prado to demonstrate its true potential, but it is a fact that just knowing its ability gives you a sense of security. The TZ-G grade has 5 optional modes that support off-road driving based on the road surface conditions (MUD&SAND/LOOSE ROCK/ MOGUL/ROCK&DIRT/ROCK). Select the mode you need.

Each mode offers optimal engine throttle control and traction control ensuring safe drivability on rough roads unique to a full-size SUV.

In addition, a multi-information display shows the steering angle of the tires and the tilt of the vehicle at a glance. The optional navigation system, which has been enlarged on the new Prado, displays this information on the navigation screen. All of the vehicle’s statuses are now available on the screen.

What is the difference in fuel efficiency between gasoline and diesel engines?

(Added by the editorial department on February 28, 2022)

The Land Cruiser Prado was partially improved in June 2021, but there is no change in fuel efficiency. The diesel engine (1GD-FTV) model is equipped with a memory function for displaying the remaining amount of urea aqueous solution (AdBlue).

Comparing fuel efficiency, the gasoline engine model gets 8.3km/L /19 MPG in WLTC mode, and the diesel engine model gets 11.2km/L/ 26 MPG. Assuming that you drive 20,000 km/12,427 miles per year, you will need about 2410L /602 gallons of gasoline and 1786L /446 gallons of diesel.

Gasoline prices continue to soar due to the impact of the Corona crisis, but the national average price is $1.23 for regular gasoline and $1.08 for diesel oil (as of February 2022). Based on this calculation, the gasoline engine Prado costs $2,984, and the diesel engine Prado costs $1,931 per year to operate. This is just an estimate based on the manufacturer’s suggested fuel efficiency, so the difference between gasoline and diesel is about $1,246; although, it will differ based on actual driving.

The price of the gasoline engine is set lower by about 43¢ so the initial investment can be kept low. However, considering operating costs, it is possible to drive a diesel car less expensively. In terms of resale, diesel engines are currently more valuable.
