Toyota Land Cruiser 70: Engine used in Land Cruiser 70 resale model

The new Land Cruiser 70 is equipped with a specially tuned V6 4L gasoline 1GR-FE type

The Land Cruiser 70 30th anniversary model is equipped with a V6 4L gasoline engine. It is a longitudinally mounted engine that has been installed in a wide range of vehicles such as the Toyota SUVs. In addition to the Land Cruiser 70, it is also used in the current models of the FJ Cruiser and Land Cruiser (Prado in Japan).

Detuned FJ Cruiser and Prado engines

The unique point is that it is detuned (reduced performance) compared to the FJ Cruiser and Land Cruiser (Prado in Japan), even though it is the same 1GR-FE type.

For example, the FJ Cruiser has a maximum output of 203 kW (276 PS) / 5,600 rpm and a maximum torque of 380 Nm (38.8 kgm / 280 lb. ft.) / 4,400 rpm. On the other hand, the 30th anniversary model has a maximum output of 170 kW (231 PS) / 5,200 rpm and a maximum torque of 360 Nm (36.7 kgm / 265 lb. ft.) / 3,800 rpm, both peak output and torque are lower.

The maximum output and maximum torque generation speed have been lowered, making it a smoother ride

However, it is premature to think that the 1GR-FE model of the Land Cruiser 70 is inferior to the FJ Cruiser because of this. What you should pay attention to is the number of revolutions generated.

The FJ Cruiser has a maximum output of 5,600 rpm and a maximum torque of 4,400 rpm, while the Land Cruiser 70 has a maximum output of 5,200 rpm and a maximum torque of 3,800 rpm.

In other words, the 1GR-FE model of the Land Cruiser 70 was tuned for low-speed rotation. Since the Land Cruiser 70 is a long-stroke engine, it is reasonable to think that it is easier to handle when driving off-road. By the way, the fuel efficiency of the FJ Cruiser is 8.0km / L / 18.81 MPG in JC08 mode, while the Land Cruiser 70 is 6.6km / L / 15.52 MPG in JC08 mode. Both are premium gasoline specifications.

Layout

Front midship engine layout

The Land Cruiser 70’s engine compartment is designed to accommodate a V8 engine and a straight-6 engine. For this reason, if you put a compact V6 engine in the vertical direction, it will be laid out closer to the bulkhead. Since the engine is behind the front axle, it can be considered almost a front mid-ship configuration. Even when driving, it is not uncommon to hear that the tip of the nose is light despite having a long engine hood.

Only the 5-speed manual transmission is combined with the 1GR-FE model of the Land Cruiser 70, and the gear ratio of the low gear was super low where the former Land Cruiser always started from 2nd gear, except for the 30th anniversary model. It has a gear ratio that makes you want to start from low gear even on general roads.
