Overview
The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is a derivative of the Land Cruiser, but the term Prado is not used in the North American market. The Land Cruiser itself is a 4WD cross-country vehicle. It has a very short history since the first Land Cruiser 70 didn’t appear on the market until April 1990. The original Land Cruiser, which only had one purpose – off-road use, was redesigned for city use. The SUV version of this vehicle made handling, ride comfort and fuel efficiency more in line with passenger cars than the original Land Cruiser. Toyota is still focused on those features in their 150 Series even though the body and engine are slightly smaller than the original Land Cruiser.
The Toyota Land Cruiser has evolved into a vehicle that represents the SUV market worldwide with global name recognition and admiration. Anyone who wants a full-fledged SUV without the feel of a full-sized SUV will enjoy driving the Land Cruiser LC Series. If you’re wondering how the fuel efficiency of the Land Cruiser stacks up against the passenger cars, then we’ve put together a fuel-efficiency outline to help you determine which Land Cruiser is right for you.

Fuel efficiency summary of Land Cruiser Prado 90 series
In May of 1996, the Land Cruiser 90 replaced the Land Cruiser 70 as a lightweight SUV. The 70 had the same body style as the 70 Van, so it was not as well received in the 4WD market as people were switching over to passenger cars and other SUVs during that time, thanks to the dominance of the Mitsubishi Pajero (marketed in the U.S. marketplace as the Montero). With this in mind, the Land Cruiser 90 was created to get their share of the marketplace back from the Pajero.

Fuel efficiency summary of Land Cruiser Prado 70 series
The first lightweight Land Cruiser 70 was developed for general users and was based on the Land Cruiser 70 van, which was a full-sized cross-country 4WD. While the Land Cruiser 70 Van is registered as a commercial vehicle, the lightweight 70 is registered as a passenger vehicle, which enhances its smaller size and better fuel efficiency. It has a retro appearance that is very attractive to buyers, and it’s still a popular model.
